Sorry, I haven't put up a new post for a while! I will try to do better from here on out!
This week we are talking about apples in class. The children will be making apple prints, tasting apples and reading books about apples. It is one of my favorite times of year. This whole month is fun - learning about fall, eating apples, carving pumpkins (yes, we will carve a pumpkin in class!), and learning about Halloween.
Even though fall started last month, we put off the fall party to let all the children get used to school a little bit. So, our fall party will be during the first week of November. I will send reminder notes home to the families that signed up to help with the parties.
Some parents may be wondering where all the worksheets and papers are?! For Montessori families, they probably aren't expecting much in the book bag at the end of the day. For other families, I need to explain a bit about Montessori education. Especially as 2 and 3 year-olds, there is very little work that will come home other than paintings. In a Montessori classroom, the child is free to choose the work that is calling to him/her. Most of the time, this is material that does not use paper - sequencing blocks, counting beads, spooning beans or using a set of binoculars. There are very few worksheets in a Montessori room. The coloring pages or paper that is available will only be used by the children that are interested in it - we don't have "stations" where each child will go through and complete a task. Today, we had one child that colored on many sheets of paper - he was really enjoying using the colors and liked seeing his art. Of course, he brought home his papers but he may have been the only one to bring home something other than our painting project today. Does that make sense? As always, please talk to us if you have any questions or if you just want to know what is going on in the classroom.
